Choosing the Right Online Dating Site

How to Decide Where to Post Your Personals Ad

With so many Internet dating options out there, it can be tough to choose the right one. Here are some suggestions to help you narrow the field.

Play the numbers. To a certain degree, dating is a numbers game. If a service is new or is limited in subscribers, the chances of finding a match are reduced. Prioritize by picking larger sites that will have a sufficiently large pool of subscribers.

Playing the numbers, part 2. In addition to checking out the size of potential dating sites, consider using more than one. This will give you exposure to a broader range of guys who might only be using one or a small number of services. It will also give you an opportunity to experiment with different types of ads.

Gay sites versus sites open to gays. Some online dating sites specifically cater to gay men. Others are open to all subscribers, but allow you to indicate both your own gender as well as the gender of your ideal match. Which is better? Neither, provided that there are enough men seeking men that use the service in your geographic area. In more remote areas and smaller communities, the larger and more established general sites may be better known than some of the gay-specific ones, but you'll have to check them out to see what's best in your area.

Take the tour. Many dating sites will allow you to see a preview the site's look and feel, and even allows limited to access to the ads (but usually without the ability to respond). Get a sense of the site and see if it's format and functions meet your desires. Some, like Out.com, including live chat functionality and other features that make it a complete online community, while others are more focused strictly on personals. In particular, check the format of the ads to see if they offer enough information to help you make a good match.

Relationships versus Casual Encounters. Some online personals sites are strictly focused on those seeking to date and form a new relationship. Others appeal to guys looking for a casual hookup or a quick fling. And some lend themselves well to both (and allow users to check off what they're looking for). Check out the ads, if possible, and decide if which ones best meet what you're looking for. There's no right answer here - just the right answer for you.
